- New York Coastal Management Program
The New York Coastal Management Program (CMP) was approved by NOAA in 1982. The Department of State (DOS), through the Division of Coastal Resources, is the lead agency responsible for administering the program. The state's Waterfront Revitalization and Coastal Resources Act provides the DOS with the authority to establish a coastal program, develop coastal policies, define the coastal boundaries, and establish state consistency requirements.
Local governments have the opportunity to participate in the state's CMP on a voluntary basis by preparing and adopting a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) that provides more detailed implementation of the State's CMP through the use of local authority such as zoning and site plan review. Annually, the DOS solicits applications from local governments for 50/50 matching grants from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund's Local Waterfront Revitalization Program. For 2013-14 fifty-one projects were funded totaling over $12 million.
